Politics Personal Statement
Where To Start
Thousands of students every year apply to study Politics. Politics by it’s nature is a popular subject choice. The personal statement is the only part of the application process in which you can truly market your skills and academic background amidst the intense competition.
You need to demonstrate your ability to grasp political thought, international relations, comparative government, and public policy. At university you will be expected to learn about the various political systems and why they take different forms in society.
Politics is part of the Social Sciences, so you must demonstrate that you are keen to learn about the range of societies, not only in the US but also world-wide.
It is key to demonstrate a desire to learn areas under the political surface and how this inspires you will enable your application to stand out.
In order to write a successful application you will need to demonstrate within your personal statement the following skills:
1. An analytic or logical mind. Can you show an event where you have drawn significant distinctions between different arguments and that you are able to conclude from data or confusing materials?
2. Ability to view connections. Have you undertaken an experience of looking at events and making connections to understand the underlining key messages? Can you demonstrate that you have taken some decisions or been involved with debate?
3. The skills of future perspective. Prospective students should be able to assess problems and look at the consequences of events.
